Put Your Boots On!

Four years ago I bought these boots. I have always loved them and it took me a lot of shopping to find them. At the time UGGS were all the rage and as much as I wanted a pair, I just didn't feel right in them. Every time I tried them on, crazy slipper flashbacks from the 80s took over, all I could see were fuzzy moon boots on my feet.

So I went ahead and bought the cowgirl boots, as they seemed like a better fit for me. Unfortunately after purchasing them all they did was sit in my closet, collecting dust and mocking me every time I attempted to dress nice (instead of my usual yoga/running gear attire).

I really did love them but for some reason I could not muster the courage to wear them out in public. I'd put them on and just before leaving the house I'd run back inside to change. And that boot self doubt always carried over onto my outfit, or perhaps it was the other way around. Flip flops and hoodies always seemed to be the answer...

For four years my struggle with boot courage continued. I did eventually wear them out but I would pair them with wide legged jeans so they were hidden. They became a pair of heals rather than a pair of boots. Looking back now I can see that the boots represented my life: If I can stay quiet in the back, and keep myself hidden, life will be perfect and no one will put me down or get upset with me...

What a horrible way to live!

But life changed. I change, I'm becoming brave. When this past Sunday hit, I FINALLY strapped those bad boys on. I paired them with my year old skinny jeans, which have been waiting (just like my boots) on a hanger since last year, and marched out the door to a little get together.

Up until Sunday I never felt confident enough to wear them 100% out in the open, for everyone to see. I figured the best place to start was at a small get together, with people I already knew. Just like becoming your authentic self, it starts small-with the people you know best.

And thus, the fool that I once saw in the mirror, wearing those boots, is gone and is being replaced with a pretty confidant young mom.

  4. They look great! I know how you felt though...I have a tall pair of boots that I rarely wear because I am never quite sure how to wear them. So I pull them out and wait for my fashionista daughter to give me the thumbs up. And it's just those boots...I have several other pairs that I wear all the time, but the rest are more casual. I need to just put them on!!
